Overall score includes:
Performance (50%): tests the time and speeds of writing data to the hard driving and reading data from the hard drive. We test using USB 3.0 and 5GB files on a Windows 7 PC. We also test any Thunderbolt connections the same way but using an Apple iMac. The test computers are re-imaged before testing the next hard drive.
Ease of use (25%): assesses the setup time and ease as well as the ease of performing common tasks. It also includes the ease of restoring a particular version of a backed up file.
Software versatility (25%): is made up of a 50% assessment of backup, 40% of security and 10% of support. A software versatility score of 0 means there is no software.
