Journalist

  • A rare opportunity to join our passionate, purpose-driven content team.

  • We're looking for a journo who can create a range of content – engaging online articles, social media videos, investigative magazine features and more.

  • Use your content creation skills to share Consumer NZ’s kaupapa of getting New Zealanders a fairer deal.

About Consumer

Consumer NZ exists to get New Zealanders a fair deal. We are the independent voice that protects and empowers New Zealand consumers. We campaign for change using the testing and research content we produce on a wide range of consumer issues. We are redefining what it means to be a consumer in Aotearoa by growing confident consumers whose collective influence is a force for good.

The Opportunity

Our journalists create a range of content – breaking consumer stories online, writing magazine features, starring in videos for our social channels and more. In a typical day, you could go from setting up a taste test in the morning to writing a hard-hitting piece of journalism in the afternoon – and our social media team will likely come asking you to be in a video somewhere in between!

The role requires the production of quality and timely writing with a high degree of autonomy. We’re interested in hearing from candidates who also have other content creation skills, particularly video and audio.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Generate content ideas based on our search data, test results, feedback from members, advocacy work and topical issues

  • Deliver 8–10 pieces of high-quality content a week, ranging from quick updates and news items on the consumer issue of the day, to compelling in-depth investigations that drive change

  • Think critically, use and analyse data, and manage legal risks

  • Write, film and star in social media content, working to grow our social media channels and share our message.

About you

You’re a journalist with the ability to sniff out a story and follow a lead in an autonomous and productive manner. You’ll need to be a confident writer, but we’re also keen to hear from people who bring additional video, audio and social media experience.

You deliver timely, trustworthy investigative and news pieces that appeal to broad audiences. You also have excellent time management skills to manage multiple stories and deadlines.

In addition, you’ll bring:

  • Minimum 3 years’ media industry experience.

  • A proven track record of delivering comprehensive, well-balanced journalism.

  • Digital experience and knowledge of SEO.

  • Experience in front of a camera or microphone preferable.

If this sounds like you, we’d love you to join us. The role is based in our fun and collaborative office in Wellington's CBD.

Please send your CV and cover letter (or a video!) telling us why you would thrive in this environment or contact [email protected] for more information.

Applications close 25 June 2026.
