Yeah, Nah Awards: Creamed corn that’s less than half corn
Pam’s Value cream style corn has won our inaugural Yeah, Nah Less Isn’t More Award.
We examined six brands of creamed corn and found the Pams Value variety had just 40% corn. The rest of the product is water, thickener, sugar and salt. By comparison, Watties version was 80% corn.
Woolworths creamed corn was a runner-up for the award, with its tin containing just 48% corn.
Fans of home-brand goods shouldn’t despair though. As part of our investigation into store brands, we found some home-brand products are comparable to private labels when it comes to quality, despite being miles apart in price.
In a chocolatey example, we looked at five brands of cocoa powder – including Cadbury and Nestle – and found Woolworths to be the cheapest. All the brands contained 100% cocoa powder.
We also surveyed different brands of milk, which varied greatly in price, but were all 100% milk.
Our advice is to check the ingredients to see how much of something you’re getting, and if you want a healthy dollop of creamed corn, steer clear of Pams Value.
