7 futuristic things stick vacuums can do in 2026

Stick vacuums are getting smarter: they now feature self-emptying docks, attachable mop heads and plenty more. Here are seven features that have wowed us recently.

On this page

  • 1. Self-emptying docks
  • 2. Automatic suction adjustment
  • 3. Vacuums that mop!
  • 4. Bendiness and flexibility
  • 5. Odour-neutralising cartridges
  • 6. Spare batteries in the box
  • 7. Much faster charging
  • 3 futuristic stick vacuums we love

1. Self-emptying docks

We’ve seen this feature creeping into models from LG, Kogan, Shark and Samsung. It’s becoming much more common for stick vacs to be able to empty themselves into their dock. This extends the time you can wait before you have to dump out the collected dust into a bin. Some vacs empty into a bag that you throw away, while others empty into a canister you empty.

2. Automatic suction adjustment

It’s become pretty common for new stick vacuums to automatically change their suction level depending on how dirty the floor is. This makes it easy for you to move from hard floor to carpet without having to manually switch up the suction level. Find it on some models from Bosch, Dyson and Shark.

3. Vacuums that mop!

A couple of Samsung stick vacuums we’ve tested can also be your mop. These models include a mopping head you attach like you would a normal vacuum head; you press a button to spray your solution.

4. Bendiness and flexibility

Stick vacs are increasingly bendable and flexible – so you don’t have to be. Some vacs from Beko and Samsung are making it easy to get under the coffee table or bed.

5. Odour-neutralising cartridges

Three Shark models have a space for an air-freshening disc, so the air is filled with scent while you clean the floor. They may appeal to dog owners or anyone who just hates that musty smell vacuums can fill the air with. There’s the downside of having to buy replacement cartridges, though.

6. Spare batteries in the box

A few of the stick vacuums we’ve tested from Bissell, Ryobi, Beko, Bosch and Samsung come with extra batteries in the box. No need for battery anxiety – just click on the spare. These are a good option if you’ve got a large home, because you won’t be forced to take a charging break before you’ve ticked the job off.

7. Much faster charging

Some vacuums claim to now be capable of charging a dead battery back to full strength much faster. Makita claims one of its models can do so in half an hour! A lot of stick vacs take over five hours, so that’s some pretty impressive innovation.
