What you need to know when buying a freezer

A freezer can be a big investment, not only in its purchase price, but because it can hold thousands of dollars’ worth of food. It’s important to make sure you get the right one for your needs. Check out the top things to consider from our freezers buying guide.

  • Chest or upright?: Do you want drawers or a big open space to stack your food?

  • Does it suit your space and needs?: Does the freezer you want fit your kitchen, or will you need to do some reno?

  • Energy rating labels: These labels help you spot energy-hungry freezers that can end up costing you more. We explain what energy rating labels are and how to read them.

  • Other factors to think about: There are a few more things to consider when buying a freezer. Are the controls easy to use? Can you see all the way to the back or the bottom? Does it automatically defrost?

  • Buying secondhand: We tell you what to look for when buying a secondhand freezer.

How we test freezers

Our test assesses:

  • how well freezers manage temperature on a daily basis

  • how fast they will warm up when the power goes off

  • how quickly they cool down when it comes on again.

Our overall score combines:

  • test performance (how well the freezer works)

  • predicted reliability (how likely models from the brand are to remain free of faults)

  • owner satisfaction (how likely owners of the brand are to be very satisfied).

We’ll only recommend freezers you’ll love to own – that work well and for a long time.
